Moving Voices Poetry Cafe

Friday, February 25, 2011 from 7:30 PM – 10:30 PM

Moving Voices is on open mic night, open to all poets and musicians!

A mixture of original and well-known work is on offer, from the serious to the downright silly. If you’re not up for performing you are very welcome to form part of an appreciative audience.

Entry is by Magic Hat, pay what you can towards the running costs of The Art House – please be generous! Hot & cold drinks, cakes and snacks and a selection of fairly traded &/or local wines, organic ales, beers and ciders will be on sale in the cafe until 10pm.

Speak to the host, Con, when you arrive to let him know if you plan to perform.

Here is what Con has to say: “If you didn’t notice it last month, we have now Moved our Voices to our new time – the last Friday of the Month. In fact, we did it whether you noticed it or not.

January’s event was a packed house of non-stop top-rate performance, so we can expect, for February, another formidable full-frontal fondling of figurative firestorms of form, free-verse and fret-boards (if you’ll excuse my use of the ‘F’ words). There is no theme, so if you want to perform that little themeless number you’ve been dying to try on for ages, try it out on us!

Don’t be alarmed if you’ve never performed before – it’s a great opportunity to give your work (or someone else’s that you admire) a public airing. Moving Voices focuses on poetry and song. Our style is that we go for short individual contributions throughout the evening, rather than a single performance ‘spot’.

We decided on this way of performing to maintain some variety within the spectrum of what we offer. We ask all performers not to take advantage of this laid-back arrangement, especially on busy nights. We like to think of ourselves as a friendly group, who welcome new faces, be they performers or audience, but we do like to give everyone as equal an amount of performance time as possible, be they stars or newcomers.”
