For a long time we’ve been wanting to find a way to make visiting The Art House more accessible to those on a lower income.
I remember being unemployed in my twenties and the lifeline cafes gave me for somewhere other than home (or the benefits office!) to go to.
Although our organic, fair trade menu is comparable to other (non organic/fairtrade) places, I know all too well from my own experience that the ‘normal’ price for a coffee or tea can be out of reach when you’re struggling on very little money.
Our cafe is our income source – the money we make from it funds the whole space and means we can provide exhibition space, workshops, events and meeting space at very affordable rates, so the cafe needs to make enough – but we’ve been talking for a while about whether there isn’t a way to open it up a little.
Public, communal spaces are vital to wellbeing, yet often you need money to use them – and a lot of people, we know, are struggling financially right now.
Our answer? On weekday afternoons, between 3 – 6pm, we are proud to announce our Magic Hat Tea Bar will be open! It’s a help-yourself bar, where you can have a hot drink by donation.
We’ll also be having board games every Tuesday, and a crafty drop-in (also by donation) every Thursday whilst the bar is open.
Please do spread the word so that the people who need this facility can know about it – click here to share it on Twitter now!
Our suppliers, Infinity Foods and our regular, Nel, have both donated the first stock of tea and coffee to go on the bar. If you’d like to help us buy the next lot, pop over and make a donation now, or pop something in the Magic Hat when you’re next in!
Love, peace and cake,
