Beautiful Garbage – Bunker178 set and decor

Jez here. Nic Beck and I were hard at it yesterday creating sets and signage for Bunker178 Events – The Art House pop ups! Using our #BeautifulGarbage method, everything used was repurposed, scavenged, materials we already had and found objects/materials. Not even one visit to the shops to create all this.

Of course, having space to store things is a constant challenge as is having a large enough indoor space to create large scale sets and decor like this. Luckily at the moment Arch 4 is available to spread out, or rain would have stopped play today!

It’s looking good. Very tired now and aching in all the places – work this size can be quite physical and we are not spring chickens, us two.

Come and see our handiwork at a pop up 🙂

One Last Glorious Time at The Art House – short film

On Sunday 17 March 2024, we invited our Patrons and crew to the ‘Last Chance Salon’, a private final night at The Art House before we had to pack up. Many of you, our Patreon supporters, were there – but some weren’t able to make it. Nicola has made a short film capturing the event from setup to pack down – and everything in between.

‘One Last Glorious Time at The Art House’ is ten minutes long and features a soundtrack by A Ninja Slob Drew me, snippets of all the performances and lots of behind-the-scenes footage of us setting up and packing down after everyone has left.

Fifteen final minutes of noise before power down

We’re almost packed up. Come say goodbye with us – in person or online.

Sunday 24 March will be lights out and power down for The Art House at 178 Above Bar St after 15 years, and the birth of Bunker178 Pop Up.

To take us out (not literally) Greyum May will be doing a 15 minute set in the doorway – the first pop up of what we hope will be many!

Come dance in the streets (well, on the pavement because safety first).

Press welcome, directors will be available for very short chats on the awful state of affairs for grassroots venues everywhere.

Everyone else: the building will not be open and please respect that this is an emotional moment for the crew and social batteries may be too low for interaction.

The mood will be celebratory, this is not a funeral but a noisy thank you to our home.

Music starts at 6.15 and ends at 6.30pm and then that’s it, but we recommend whilst you are out to go and find a local place to spend your money.

Can’t make it? Watch our page for a livestream.

Au revoir 178 Above Bar

Tomorrow, we will hand the keys back after 15 years.

This building, 178 Above Bar St, is coming to the end of its history, with just seven years to run in the headlease and council plans to sell all of upper Above Bar for development when the leases revert to the council.

At the moment, you can see the wall and just make out where this lettering was

We’re so grateful to have been part of the history of this 114 year old building, which started as a Milliners and was various sorts of clothing shop until 2005 when it briefly became ‘Taste of Africa’ restaurant before we descended on it.

It has one more chapter, as we know the new tenants 🙂 we will pass on news about this once they’ve solidified their plans!

For us, the building will live on in the name of our pop-up, Bunker178

The way we will remember it – full of people having a lovely time
